Thomson Reuters now plugs Westlaw research into Claude, but only for firms on CoCounsel Legal, and that subscription has no public price. Here is what the connector does, what the full bill looks like, and the published alternatives if you only need case law inside Claude.

On 25 September 2026 we read the Thomson Reuters connector guide, its 12 May 2026 press release and the claude.com pricing page, and took every requirement and price from those pages. Neither Thomson Reuters document names a price or a Claude plan, and we say so where it matters rather than filling the gap with a guess. What the CoCounsel Claude integration actually does
The name suggests Westlaw inside Claude. What ships is narrower and more useful than that sounds: Claude hands a research question to CoCounsel Legal, CoCounsel does the research on Thomson Reuters content, and Claude gets back a finished report it can work with. The guide is explicit that "Deep legal research is the first CoCounsel Legal capability available in Claude."

What you need
The requirement is one sentence in the guide: "You need a CoCounsel Legal subscription with the MCP connector enabled for your account." A Claude account alone does nothing here, and neither, going by that wording, does a plain Westlaw plan.
How you set it up
In Claude Desktop, open Settings, then Connectors, search for CoCounsel Legal and click Connect. You sign in with your Thomson Reuters credentials and authorize it, and the tools appear in the connectors menu of your conversations.
What it does not tell you
Neither the guide nor the press release names a price, a per-run limit or which Claude plans qualify. Claude lists connectors from its Pro plan up. Everything else is a question for your Thomson Reuters representative, in writing.

Westlaw in Claude is one route, and the priciest
Most people searching for the Westlaw Claude connector want one outcome: Claude drafting from real authority instead of from memory. There are four ways to get there, and only one of them runs through a CoCounsel contract.

A caution on the browser route. Letting Claude drive a Westlaw tab you are signed in to is technically easy, and several guides recommend it. It is still your seat being used by an agent, and research platforms license content per user under a subscriber agreement. Thomson Reuters says of its own connector that the data "is proprietary and subject to licensing restrictions." Read your agreement before you rely on the browser route for firm work.

The gap between the first row and the rest is the whole story. The official connector is the right answer for a firm that already pays for CoCounsel Legal, because the connector adds convenience to a contract that already exists. It is the wrong answer for a lawyer who has no Westlaw contract and simply wants Claude to stop inventing cases. Where the Westlaw connector wins. Nothing else on this list carries KeyCite signals and Westlaw editorial content into the research Claude receives. For a firm whose courts and opponents speak in KeyCite flags, that is worth real money, and the connector saves the copy and paste between two windows.
Where Cases fits. Cases is not a Claude connector and does not pretend to be. You ask a legal question in plain English and read the US federal and state decisions that answer it, as cards with the holding and a real citation you can open. A connected Claude still needs a lawyer reading the case
A connector cuts the odds that Claude invents a case, because the authority comes from a real database. It does not change who is responsible for the brief. The public AI hallucination cases database kept by Damien Charlotin listed 2,077 decisions as of 23 September 2026, and the sanctions in those rulings fall on filings nobody checked, not on the use of AI itself.
ABA Formal Opinion 512 puts the same duty in ethics terms: competence, confidentiality with informed client consent, and candor to the tribunal. Whichever route you pick, open every case Claude cites and read it. Cases returns real US decisions with the citation on every card; Starter is not a citator, and Pro adds a good-law flag that marks cases to re-verify rather than a KeyCite or Shepard's report.

Is it safe to use the Westlaw Claude connector with client information?
Thomson Reuters says customer data is not used to train third-party models and is not shared beyond the customer environment. On the Claude side, the plan matters: claude.com lists Free, Pro and Max as opt-out for training and Team as no training on your content by default. Under ABA Formal Opinion 512 the confidentiality decision is still yours.
Does Claude replace Westlaw for legal research?
No. Claude has no case law library of its own. It drafts and analyzes well, but authority has to come from a connected source or from research you did elsewhere, and every citation it returns still needs to be opened and read.
