midpage Alternative: Plain-English Case Law Search for Research-Only Work
midpage changed its pricing this summer and most pages that rank for it have not noticed. The 30 dollar Starter plan is gone, and the paid seat is now Professional at 100 dollars a month. It is still a good product, and for docket and drafting work it is the better buy. If you want the on-point case and nothing else, keep reading.

Where midpage fits, and where Cases does
Until this summer this was the easiest comparison on the site to write, because midpage Starter cost 30 dollars a month against our 29 and price simply did not come into it. That is no longer true. The cheapest paid midpage seat for a practicing attorney is now 80 dollars a month on an annual commitment or 100 month to month, roughly three times Cases. midpage also added things with that price, including an AI citator, so the honest question is whether you need what the extra 50 to 70 dollars a month buys.
Buy midpage if your work extends past finding the case. Its Pro tier bundles agentic PACER tooling for pulling docket reports and filings, a drafting mode with a monthly credit allowance, and integrations that let you run its research from inside ChatGPT and Claude rather than in a separate tab. For a litigator who lives in dockets, or anyone who wants the research to land directly in the draft, that is a real workflow advantage and Cases does not have an answer to it.
Buy Cases if the drafting and docket half is weight you will not carry. A meaningful number of researchers, paralegals checking authority, students, solos handling advisory work, in-house counsel answering a question from the business, only ever need the find-and-verify loop. Cases is built narrowly for that: plain-English question in, on-point US federal and state precedents out as headnote cards with the holding surfaced and a citation you check yourself. No drafting suite, no credit meter on your searches, no usage tier to reason about.
One note on pricing accuracy that applies to both of us. midpage publishes its rates on its own site, which is more than Westlaw, LexisNexis, CoCounsel, or Bloomberg Law will do, and it deserves credit for that. This page is also the proof that published prices move: our July figures of 30 and 80 were correct in July, and on 10 September 2026 the same page showed 100 a month or 80 billed annually with no Starter plan at all. We compared a Wayback Machine capture from 10 July against the live page rather than trusting a directory, and several pages ranking for midpage pricing today still show the old numbers. Confirm the current rate on midpage site before you buy, and hold this page to the same standard.

What is the best midpage alternative?
That depends on which half of midpage you use. If you want the research half only, Cases does plain-English US case law search at 29 dollars per month, about a third of the midpage Professional monthly rate. If you want dockets, drafting or a citator, no cheaper tool replaces that cleanly and the honest answer is to stay. A Westlaw or LexisNexis citator is the other route to good-law checking.
Does midpage have a free trial?
Yes, but it changed shape. The July 2026 pricing page promised a two week free trial on all plans. The September page instead offers a free Trial tier that needs no credit card and carries limited AI research usage, with no length stated. That is enough to test relevance on your own practice area before you pay for Professional.
Does midpage work inside ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. midpage made its legal research available natively inside ChatGPT and Claude, so you can run research from the assistant you already use instead of switching to a separate platform. That is a genuine differentiator and Cases does not currently offer an equivalent. Whether it matters depends on whether your drafting already happens inside one of those assistants.
