CoCounsel Review and Whether 784 a Month Is Worth It for Your Firm

CoCounsel Legal is worth it for a US litigator who would pay for Westlaw anyway and wants the drafting and document tools on top. It is hard to justify for anyone else. Thomson Reuters now lists it online at 784 dollars per attorney per month on a 1-year plan with all states plus federal content, and 637 on a 3-year plan, of which roughly 400 is the Westlaw seat you were already buying.

This review is for a US solo or small-firm attorney with a CoCounsel trial, a renewal notice or a Thomson Reuters checkout page open, deciding whether to commit for one to three years. On 9 October 2026 we read the CoCounsel Legal plans and pricing page for law firms option by option, checked that a made-up product address on the same site returns a 404 (so the page is genuine), and re-read the Westlaw Advantage price beside it. It is informational research, not legal advice.

Is CoCounsel worth it?

Yes, if three things are true: you research US case law several times a week, you would buy a Westlaw seat regardless, and you will actually use the drafting and document review it adds. In that case the honest price of CoCounsel is not 784 dollars. It is the difference between 784 and the 399.75 Westlaw Advantage costs on its own for the same content, about 384 dollars a month for one lawyer on a 1-year plan.

If any of the three is false, the math turns quickly. A transactional lawyer who rarely cites a case is paying for Westlaw to get a drafting assistant. A solo who researches twice a month is paying 9,408 dollars a year for something a 20 dollar general AI seat plus a cheaper research tool covers most weeks. We put those two setups side by side on our CoCounsel vs Claude pricing page.

How much does CoCounsel cost?

Until this year the answer was "call sales", and most pricing articles still say so. Thomson Reuters now runs an online configurator for law firms: you pick the number of attorneys, the jurisdiction and a 1, 2 or 3 year term, and it shows a price you can check out at. The 2-year term is 12 percent off and the 3-year term 18 percent off. These are the figures we read, per month for the whole firm, before tax.

Firm and content1-year plan3-year plan
1 attorney, all states plus federal784.00637.00
1 attorney, one federal circuit679.20551.85
5 attorneys, all states plus federal2,461.602,000.05
5 attorneys, one federal circuit2,144.801,742.65
10 attorneys, all states plus federal4,224.003,432.00

Two details matter more than the headline. First, the online prices are for new customers only; the page tells existing customers to contact sales for their own number, so a firm already on Westlaw cannot simply buy at this rate. Second, the per-attorney price falls as you add lawyers, from 784 for one to about 492 at five and 422 at ten. Above ten attorneys the page sends you to a sales representative. Our CoCounsel Legal tiers page sets out what each of the four Thomson Reuters configurations bundles.

CoCounsel Legal against the cheaper Thomson Reuters plans

CoCounsel Legal is the top of a four-plan lineup, and the cheaper three are priced online too. For one attorney with all states plus federal content, read the same day:

PlanWhat it adds1-year plan3-year plan
CoCounsel Essentials aloneAI drafting and document review, no Westlaw360.00292.50

Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel EssentialsBoth of the above639.20519.35
CoCounsel LegalBoth, plus Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set and the full CoCounsel feature set784.00637.00

The step from the third row to the fourth is 144.80 dollars a month on a 1-year plan, and it buys Practical Law plus the CoCounsel features the cheaper bundle leaves out. If you never open practice notes or standard documents, Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials is the better buy, and if you do not need Westlaw at all, Essentials alone is less than half the price of CoCounsel Legal.

Is Westlaw CoCounsel worth it if you already pay for Westlaw?

This is where most buyers actually sit, and it is the cleanest way to judge the product. Westlaw Advantage on its own lists at 256.75 dollars a month for one circuit and 399.75 for all states plus federal. CoCounsel Legal for one attorney with the same all-states content is 784. So the AI research layer, the Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set and the drafting and review tools together cost roughly 384 dollars a month, or about 4,600 a year, on a 1-year plan.

Ask what 4,600 dollars buys in your hours. If CoCounsel's drafting, deposition prep and document review save a billing lawyer two hours a month, it pays for itself at most US billing rates. If you would mostly use it to ask research questions you could type into Westlaw anyway, it does not. Be honest about which lawyer you are before the demo, because the demo will show you all of it.

What you get for the money

The CoCounsel Legal plan page lists three bundled products. Westlaw Advantage brings the case law, statutes, headnotes, KeyCite, Deep Research and litigation analytics. Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set brings practice notes, standard documents, checklists and What's Market data. CoCounsel Essentials brings the AI workflows: document review and comparison, timelines, deposition preparation, agentic drafting in Word, contract playbooks and citation finalizing. Thomson Reuters says the whole thing reasons across 1.9 billion Westlaw and Practical Law documents.

The strength is that the AI reads authority you can rely on and flags it with KeyCite, so the citations it hands you exist and their treatment is visible. That is a real difference from a general chatbot, and it is the reason this product costs what it does.

What independent evaluations say

CoCounsel took part in the Vals Legal AI Report, run by Vals AI with Legaltech Hub and published on 27 February 2025, and averaged 79.5 across the four tasks it entered, the highest average of the products tested. Be careful with that number: other products sat different and harder task sets, so averages are not directly comparable. We unpack that in our Vincent AI vs CoCounsel comparison. CoCounsel did not enter the separate October 2025 Vals study of legal research tools.

The older warning still applies in spirit. A 2024 Stanford RegLab and HAI study of Westlaw's earlier AI-Assisted Research found incorrect or misgrounded answers in roughly a third of test queries. The product has changed since, but the lesson has not: grounded AI reduces invented citations, it does not end them. Courts sanction the filing, not the software. Open every case before it goes in a brief.

The catches before you sign

The 18 percent discount is the price of a 3-year term, which runs to late 2029 if you sign this quarter. Legal AI prices in this market have moved every few months since 2024, so you are betting the 637 dollar rate stays competitive. A 1-year plan costs more and keeps the exit open. Whatever you choose, put the renewal date and the auto-renewal notice window somewhere you will see them; firms that track vendor terms in contract management software that flags renewal dates are the ones that get to renegotiate instead of rolling over.

Also ask, in writing, what the renewal price will be. The online price is a new-customer price. Nothing on the page promises it at renewal, and existing customers are already routed to sales for theirs.

Who should buy CoCounsel, and who should not

Buy it if you are a litigator at a firm of one to ten attorneys, you research weekly, you would pay for Westlaw anyway, and you will use the drafting and review tools. A single federal circuit at 679.20 a month is the sensible entry point if your practice stays in one circuit.

Skip it if your work is mostly transactional, if you research a few times a month, or if your budget for research software is closer to a hundred dollars than eight hundred. For those firms the realistic options with published prices are on our CoCounsel alternatives page, and the full field of legal research costs is on our legal research pricing comparison.

Where Cases fits

Cases does one part of this job. You ask a legal question in plain English and read the US federal and state decisions that answer it, each as a headnote card with a citation you can open. It is 49 dollars a month, or 288 a year billed yearly, with no term and no sales call. We do not draft, review your documents or carry Practical Law, and our Starter plan has no citator, so verify before you file. Firms use it when research is the job they need and the rest of a CoCounsel bundle is not.

CoCounsel review questions

Is CoCounsel worth the money?

For a litigator who already needs Westlaw and will use drafting and document review, yes, because the real cost over Westlaw Advantage alone is about 384 dollars a month for one attorney. For transactional lawyers and light researchers it is usually not, since most of the 784 dollar price is the Westlaw content they would rarely use.

How much does CoCounsel cost per month?

On 9 October 2026 Thomson Reuters listed CoCounsel Legal at 784 dollars per attorney per month on a 1-year plan with all states plus federal content, 686 on a 2-year plan and 637 on a 3-year plan. One federal circuit was 679.20 on 1 year. Online prices apply to new customers at firms of up to 10 attorneys.

Is CoCounsel the same as Casetext?

It grew out of it. Thomson Reuters bought Casetext in August 2023 for 650 million dollars and shut the standalone product down on April 1, 2025. CoCounsel was Casetext's AI assistant; it now sits on Westlaw and Practical Law content rather than Casetext's own library, and it costs several times what Casetext charged.

Does CoCounsel have a free trial?

Thomson Reuters offers trial requests on its Westlaw and CoCounsel products, but there is no free tier, and paid access comes through a 1, 2 or 3 year plan. If you only want to test AI case law search before committing to a term, a tool with a monthly plan lets you run real searches first.
