Fastcase vs Westlaw Pricing: What a Solo Attorney Pays in 2026

For most US solo and small-firm lawyers, Fastcase costs nothing extra because their bar association already pays for it, while Westlaw Advantage costs 256.75 to 399.75 dollars a month. That is roughly 3,080 to 4,800 dollars a year. The real question is not which is cheaper. It is whether the work you do each week needs what that money buys: KeyCite, West headnotes, the Key Number system and the AI research layer. If most of your research is finding the on-point case and reading it, the free bar benefit plus a focused search tool usually covers it.

Most "Fastcase vs Westlaw" comparisons online were written when Fastcase was an independent company with its own price list. Neither of those things is true anymore. Fastcase merged with vLex in 2023, Clio completed its acquisition of vLex on 10 November 2025, and the Fastcase pricing page no longer leads anywhere. Meanwhile Thomson Reuters did something unusual for it: it published a Westlaw price. So a comparison that was once guesswork can now be done with real numbers on one side and a very clear answer on the other.

How much does Fastcase cost in 2026?

For a lawyer who is a member of a participating bar, Fastcase costs nothing on top of dues. The Fastcase homepage still says it partners with more than 80 national, state and county bar associations to provide its legal research as a member benefit, and that benefit is how the product reached most of its users in the first place.

If you want to buy Fastcase outright, there is no public price to read. fastcase.com/pricing now returns a 301 redirect to a vLex page tagged "retail migration April 2025", and that destination returns a 404. vLex's own /pricing path returns a 404 too, and we confirmed that is a real absence rather than a blocked request by asking the same host for a page that never existed and getting the same clean 404. Directory reviews quote paid tiers from about 65 dollars per user per month. Treat that as a starting point for a conversation, not a budget line.

How much does Westlaw cost for a solo attorney?

Westlaw Advantage, the current top Westlaw plan, is 256.75 dollars a month for single-circuit coverage or 399.75 dollars a month for all states plus federal. Thomson Reuters says online pricing is only for new customers at firms of up to 10 attorneys; existing customers and bigger firms are sent to sales. When we last walked the checkout it offered 12 percent off a two-year term and 18 percent off a three-year term.

Here is what that means over a year and over a full multi-year commitment for one attorney:

The discount is real, but look at the right-hand column. A three-year term saves roughly 2,590 dollars against paying the one-year rate three times, and it locks you in for 36 months. Is Fastcase as good as Westlaw?

For finding and reading primary law, Fastcase is close enough for a lot of everyday practice. For the editorial layer, no, and it does not claim to be. The difference is not the cases. Both have federal and state case law. The difference is everything Thomson Reuters editors add on top: headnotes written by attorneys, the Key Number system that lets you pull every case on a narrow point across jurisdictions, and a deep library of treatises and practice guides.

That layer matters most in three situations. The first is when you are new to an area of law and need a treatise to tell you what the questions are. The second is when you need every case on a narrow point, not the three best ones. The third is when a brief is going to a court that will notice a missed negative treatment. If your week is mostly the same practice area, the same courts and motions you have written before, you are paying for an editorial layer you rarely open.

Does Fastcase have a citator like KeyCite?

Yes. Fastcase's citator is now called Cert Citator and it is included in the bar benefit. It flags cases that have been overturned or criticized. It has changed names with each change of ownership, from Authority Check to Bad Law Bot and now Cert Citator, which is why older guides disagree about what it is called. It is not as deep as KeyCite: it will tell you a case has negative history, but it will not match KeyCite's editorial treatment flags and depth of citing references. For a lawyer without Westlaw, it is the difference between checking and not checking, which matters.

What does the Westlaw money buy that Fastcase does not?

Three things, in order of how often they actually change an outcome:

• KeyCite. The main reason careful litigators keep Westlaw. If a case you rely on has been limited in another circuit, KeyCite is where you are most likely to find out before opposing counsel does.
• Secondary sources. Treatises, practice guides and American Law Reports. When you need to learn an area fast, this is where the hours go.
• The AI layer. Advantage includes Deep Research and document tools such as the Litigation Document Analyzer. They are useful. They are also the part of the price you can most easily get somewhere else, because AI legal research is now sold on its own by several vendors at a fraction of the Westlaw rate.

One thing worth saying plainly: the document tools inside Advantage read your own documents, which is a different job from research. If the real reason you are looking at Westlaw is to review a pile of discovery or a client's case file, a tool built for AI review of your own case file is a separate purchase, and it does not need a research subscription attached to it.

Fastcase vs Westlaw: which should a small firm buy?

The third row is the one most small firms miss. Westlaw is priced per seat, and not every lawyer in a firm needs KeyCite and the treatise library every day. One seat for the person who finalizes briefs, and cheaper tools for first-pass research, is a common and sensible split.
